The legal bases relevant in each individual case are explained in the following paragraphs of this privacy policy.
Recipients of personal data
In the course of our business activities, we work with various external parties. In some cases this also requires the transfer of personal data to these external parties. We only pass on personal data to external parties if this is necessary for the performance of a contract, if we are legally obliged to do so (for example passing data to tax authorities), if we have a legitimate interest under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR in passing it on, or if another legal basis permits the transfer. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO PROFILING BASED ON THESE PROVISIONS. THE RESPECTIVE LEGAL BASIS ON WHICH PROCESSING RELIES CAN BE FOUND IN THIS PRIVACY POLICY. IF YOU OBJECT, WE WILL NO LONGER PROCESS YOUR AFFECTED PERSONAL DATA UNLESS WE CAN DEMONSTRATE COMPELLING LEGITIMATE GROUNDS FOR THE PROCESSING WHICH OVERRIDE YOUR INTERESTS, RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS, OR THE PROCESSING SERVES THE ESTABLISHMENT, EXERCISE OR DEFENCE OF LEGAL CLAIMS (OBJECTION UNDER ART. 21(1) GDPR).
IF YOUR PERSONAL DATA IS PROCESSED FOR DIRECT ADVERTISING PURPOSES, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO OBJECT AT ANY TIME TO THE PROCESSING OF PERSONAL DATA CONCERNING YOU FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUCH ADVERTISING. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO PROFILING INSOFAR AS IT IS RELATED TO SUCH DIRECT ADVERTISING. IF YOU OBJECT, YOUR PERSONAL DATA WILL NO LONGER BE USED FOR THE PURPOSE OF DIRECT ADVERTISING (OBJECTION UNDER ART. 21(2) GDPR).

In the event of violations of the GDPR, data subjects have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, in particular in the member state of their habitual residence, their place of work or the place of the alleged violation. The right to lodge a complaint exists without prejudice to other administrative or judicial remedies.
Right to data portability
You have the right to have data that we process automatically on the basis of your consent or in fulfilment of a contract handed over to you or to a third party in a common, machine-readable format. If you request the direct transfer of the data to another controller, this will only take place insofar as it is technically feasible.
Information, correction and deletion
Within the framework of the applicable legal provisions, you have the right at any time to free information about your stored personal data, its origin and recipients and the purpose of the data processing and, where applicable, a right to correction or deletion of this data. You can contact us at any time about this and any other questions on personal data.
Right to restriction of processing
You have the right to request the restriction of the processing of your personal data. You can contact us about this at any time. The right to restriction of processing exists in the following cases:
- If you dispute the accuracy of your personal data stored by us, we usually need time to check this. For the duration of the check, you have the right to request the restriction of the processing of your personal data.
- If the processing of your personal data was or is unlawful, you can request the restriction of data processing instead of deletion.
- If we no longer need your personal data but you need it to exercise, defend or assert legal claims, you have the right to request the restriction of the processing of your personal data instead of deletion.
- If you have lodged an objection under Art. 21(1) GDPR, a balance must be struck between your interests and ours. As long as it has not been established whose interests prevail, you have the right to request the restriction of the processing of your personal data.
If you have restricted the processing of your personal data, this data may, apart from being stored, only be processed with your consent or for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims or to protect the rights of another natural or legal person or for reasons of important public interest of the European Union or a member state.
SSL or TLS encryption
For security reasons and to protect the transmission of confidential content, such as orders or enquiries that you send to us as the site operator, this site uses SSL or TLS encryption. You can recognise an encrypted connection by the address line of your browser changing from “http://” to “https://” and by the lock symbol in your browser line.
If SSL or TLS encryption is activated, the data you transmit to us cannot be read by third parties.
4. Data collection on this website
Cookies
Our website uses so-called “cookies”. Cookies are small data packets and do not cause any damage to your device. They are stored on your device either temporarily for the duration of a session (session cookies) or permanently (permanent cookies). Session cookies are deleted automatically at the end of your visit. Permanent cookies remain stored on your device until you delete them yourself or your web browser deletes them automatically.
Cookies can come from us (first-party cookies) or from third-party companies (third-party cookies). Third-party cookies enable the integration of certain services from third-party companies within websites (for example cookies for handling payment services).
Cookies have various functions. Many cookies are technically necessary, because certain website functions would not work without them (for example the shopping basket function or the display of videos). Other cookies can be used to evaluate user behaviour or for advertising purposes.
Cookies that are required to carry out the electronic communication process, to provide certain functions you have requested (for example the shopping basket function) or to optimise the website (for example cookies for measuring the web audience) are necessary cookies and are stored on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, unless another legal basis is stated. The website operator has a legitimate interest in storing necessary cookies for the technically error-free and optimised provision of its services. If consent to the storage of cookies and comparable recognition technologies has been requested, processing takes place exclusively on the basis of this consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR and § 25(1) TDDDG). Consent can be revoked at any time.
You can set your browser so that you are informed about the setting of cookies and only allow cookies in individual cases, exclude the acceptance of cookies for certain cases or in general, and activate the automatic deletion of cookies when closing the browser. If cookies are deactivated, the functionality of this website may be limited.
If further cookies and services are used on this website, you can find this in this privacy policy and in the cookie policy.
Enquiries by email or contact form
If you send us enquiries by email or contact form, your details from the enquiry, including the contact details you provide there, will be stored by us for the purpose of processing the enquiry and in case of follow-up questions. We do not pass on this data without your consent.
This data is processed on the basis of Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR if your enquiry is related to the performance of a contract or is necessary to carry out pre-contractual measures. In all other cases, processing is based on our legitimate interest in the effective handling of enquiries addressed to us (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) or on your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) if this has been requested. Consent can be revoked at any time.
The data you send us by enquiry remains with us until you ask us to delete it, revoke your consent to storage, or the purpose for storing the data no longer applies (for example after your enquiry has been processed). Mandatory statutory provisions, in particular retention periods, remain unaffected.
5. Plugins and tools
Fonts (local hosting)
For the uniform display of fonts, this site uses the font “Figtree”, which is provided under the SIL Open Font License. The font files are installed locally on our server. This does not involve a connection to servers of Google or other third parties.
6. Analysis tools and advertising
Audience measurement with Umami (own instance)
This website uses the open-source software Umami for audience measurement. Umami runs on our own server in Germany, and no data is transferred to third parties. Umami does not set cookies and does not store complete IP addresses. The page viewed, the referring website, browser type, device type, screen size, language and country are recorded. An anonymous value is formed from the IP address and browser identifier using a random value that changes daily. This value can neither be traced back to you nor recognised beyond the day.
This is done on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. We have a legitimate interest in the anonymised analysis of user behaviour in order to improve our website. You can object to the measurement at any time by deselecting the category “Statistics” in the privacy settings (link “Cookie settings” in the footer of every page). Your choice is stored in your browser and takes effect immediately.
Own audience measurement (page views)
We also count page views using our own method, operated on our server. When a page is viewed, your browser transmits the address viewed, the referring website and the browser and device type to our server. Your IP address is not stored, but shortened together with the browser identifier and a random value that changes daily to form an anonymous daily value. No cookies are set and no user profiles are created. Clicks on outgoing partner links are counted anonymously in the same way.
The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in evaluating the reach of this website. You can also object to this measurement through the category “Statistics” in the privacy settings.
Rating articles
You can rate articles with stars. The rating, the article, the time, country, device and browser type and the anonymous daily value from the previous section are stored. Your IP address is not stored. So that you are not asked more than once, your browser remembers the rating locally. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in improving our content.
VG Wort tracking pixels (METIS)
This website uses tracking pixels from Verwertungsgesellschaft WORT (VG WORT), Untere Weidenstraße 5, 81543 Munich, Germany. We use these pixels to determine the likelihood of our texts being copied. They are the basis on which authors receive the remuneration to which they are legally entitled for secondary use.
The counting procedure (METIS) is carried out technically by Kantar Deutschland GmbH. When a page with a tracking pixel is viewed, a connection is established to a server of the domain met.vgwort.de. Your IP address is transmitted and immediately anonymised there. It cannot be linked to you personally, no personal data is stored and no user profiles are created.
This is done on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. We have a legitimate interest in determining copyright remuneration claims. If corresponding consent has been requested, processing takes place exclusively on the basis of Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR and § 25(1) TDDDG. Consent can be revoked at any time.
Further information can be found in VG WORT’s privacy policy: https://www.vgwort.de/datenschutz.html. You can object to the measurement here: https://optout.ioam.de/.
Partner programmes (affiliate links)
This website is funded through partner programmes of financial providers and affiliate networks. Links to such offers are marked with an asterisk (*). The embedded links set cookies which make it possible to trace and bill the brokering of a contract. In doing so, the respective network processes, among other things, your IP address and details of the link you clicked. The cookies are only set when you click on a partner link, not when you merely visit this website.
Processing takes place on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. We have a legitimate interest in funding our website. If corresponding consent has been requested, processing takes place exclusively on the basis of Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR and § 25(1) TDDDG. Consent can be revoked at any time.
The networks in use are listed on the page How this site is funded. As soon as a network is integrated, it will be listed here with its provider and privacy policy.
